1. Bangladesh was heavily funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Numerous organizations in the country relied on this financial assistance, employing thousands of doctors, engineers, and workers.

Bangladesh, which once took a strong stance against India, is now facing serious challenges. However, with Donald Trump’s return to power, the situation has completely changed. The Trump administration has halted financial aid worth hundreds of crores and assigned three officials to handle the situation in Bangladesh.

Under the Biden administration, the country received significant financial aid, intelligence, and military support from the U.S., empowering Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus’s government to adopt a tough approach toward India.

2. The External Affairs Ministry said that India and the US are working on an early visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragic mid-air collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter in Washington DC, United States.

4. India Lights Up India Gate to Mark World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day 2025. The event was organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to highlight India’s progress in the fight against NTDs, with a special focus on Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) and Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL).

This symbolic act is part of a global movement to light up iconic landmarks across the world to raise awareness about Neglected Tropical Diseases. It also emphasizes the importance of collective action to combat these debilitating diseases.

5. Serbian Ambassador to India, Sinisa Pavic, expressed optimism for 2025, highlighting the potential for successful cooperation between Serbia and India.

1. Headline inflation in Sri Lanka, as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index, dropped to minus 4 percent in January. The year-on-year inflation was recorded at minus 1.7 percent in December.

2. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin on Thursday expressed concern over the challenges Bangladesh has been facing since hosting the Rohingyas and the declining funds from international donors.

3. The World Health Organization (WHO) has released new guidelines recommending the switch from regular table salt to potassium-enriched salt substitutes as part of efforts to combat hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases. The WHO’s mission to lower sodium intake stems from extensive research highlighting the health risks posed by excess sodium consumption.

4. Niger becomes the first country in the African Region to eliminate onchocerciasis.

Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, is a parasitic disease and is the second leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide, after trachoma. It is transmitted to humans through the bites of infective black flies, primarily found in riverine areas.

5. Israel has released 110 Palestinian prisoners as part of the next phase in the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. The process was initially delayed after crowds surged at one of the hostage handover points. However, the release was celebrated largely in Gaza and West Bank.

6. Romania recorded 133,635 cases of acute respiratory infections and eight flu-related deaths in the week from January 20 to 26. According to the National Institute of Public Health, this marks a 6.5 percent increase from the previous week.
