Delhi’s Air Quality Deteriorates, ₹5.85 Crore Penalty Collection

Delhi: Air pollution in Delhi has moved to a much grimmer level and is continuing to do so in the metropolis as the Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed the “severe” threshold in many places. The pollution levels have increased in the city, and stringent measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage III have been enforced by authorities to tackle the crisis.

Air Pollution On the Rise: A Grim Reality

AQI is hazardous at many monitoring stations in Delhi, which crossed the 400 mark. The worst spots include Anand Vihar, Jahangirpuri, and Ashok Vihar. Some of its examples include seasonal factors, vehicular emissions, industrial pollution and stubble burning by states near Delhi.

GRAP Stage III Measures Underway:

Taking into account the deteriorating air quality, the Delhi government has implemented GRAP Stage III measures, of which are :
Suspension of Construction Activities All such construction and demolition activities which are not absolutely necessary have been suspended in order to cut down the dust emissions.Vehicle Restrictions There has been a restriction on the use of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel vehicles.

3. On-site inspection of industries has been conducted to see if there is any violation of anti-pollution norms. All outside activities in schools have been banned, and water sprinklers have been installed in all places where pollution is found to be high.

As much as ₹5.85 crores of fine was collected for infractions.

Violation of GRAP norms: MCD imposed a ₹5.85 crore penalty for violation of GRAP norms. More than 500 surveillance teams, without interrupting service, detected open garbage burning, unauthorized dumping of construction waste and tandoor use without permission.

Fines of ₹1.37 crore are collected against violations of construction waste.

Fines amounting to ₹14.85 lakh against garbage burning.

The Center is now laying thrust on Winter Action, efforts at curbing stubble burning, alternative cleaner fuels and boosting public transport. However, the long-term remedies will have to come in the shape of electric mobility, afforestation and the strict enforcement of pollution laws to ensure sustainment of improvement.

The agency appeals to residents, asking them to contribute by not using personal vehicles and adopting eco-friendly products. It requests that they follow measures pertaining to pollution control. Only through cooperative effort can this recurrent air quality issues in the city be addressed.
