Delhi: It is said that the Out-of-door Activities Barred as Lahore Battles Soaring Air Pollution. It is said that the Pakistan government has imposed a ban on outdoor activities from November 11 till November 17 across the city as air pollution has reached alarming levels in Lahore. Outdoor games and other events are barred; even dine-outs are banned, and although religious congregations are allowed. Lahore has made a record in air quality and is now one of the world’s most polluted cities. AQI levels at several places, including Thokar Niaz Baig and Johar Town, have crossed 850, bringing health hazard conditions to people here. The pollution situation has forced the administration to keep shops and markets shut till 8 PM, but all essential services are available here .
Cross-Border Air Currents and Local Factors Worsen Conditions
The conditions in Lahore have deteriorated further because of steady currents carrying pollutants from India, mainly from places such as Amritsar and New Delhi. Whatever efforts have been taken to resist pollution, Lahore’s condition, along with local sources of emissions such as vehicular and industrial pollutants, has truly added fuel to the fire. Lately, the smog situation is worsened by the fact that there has been little rainfall and low wind speed, which captures toxic air within the region. The officials encourage the general public-the citizens-to monitor the air quality, limit their time spent outdoors and to use masks.
Health and Safety Concerns
This smog pollution has further caused severe health issues, and officials claim that the respiratory-related problems, eye irritation, and other diseases are increasing among the population. According to health experts, this weather condition should be strictly avoided, and the elderly, children, and other people who already suffer from such illnesses have been strictly asked not to go outdoors. The government of Lahore has enhanced their anti-smog measures by prohibiting open-burning outside and emissions from regional factories, and the same is currently happening in Islamabad, too.
Government Reaction
According to a statement, the menace of Lahore would be tackled in a long run as it would take at least a decade to eradicate the pollution prevailing here. Meanwhile, local leaders, including Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, urged citizens to report emission presence visible in the sky to their respective helplines.
