1. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in Midnapore, Jhargram and South 24 Parganas districts in West Bengal. An orange alert has been issued in Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, and Purulia districts.

2. In Odisha, relief and restoration work is ongoing at war footing to bring back normalcy in the cyclone ‘Dana’-battered coastal districts of Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Jagatsinghpur. Personnel from NDRF, ODRAF, Fire Services, energy, and other departments are working round the clock to restore road connectivity and power supply.

3. Kerala is also witnessing widespread rain under the influence of Dana. The IMD issued an orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts.

4. The air quality in Delhi-NCR continues to remain in the poor category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi’s air quality index was recorded at 270. The Centre has asked state governments to enhance their preparedness in view of air pollution. Dr. Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services, has written a letter to the health departments of states and union territories regarding air pollution preparedness.

5. Northern Railway to Operate 195 Special Trains for Diwali and Chhath, Adding Over 170,000 Seats for Passengers from trips of special trains from 26 Oct to 7th November for the convenience of passengers.

6. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced an important initiative. The Government of India will commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This celebration will span two years, from 2024 to 2026. It aims to honour Patel’s crucial contributions to India. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. He is often referred to as the “Iron Man of India.” Since 2014, October 31 as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas‘ or National Unity Day.

7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will share his thoughts with the people of the country and abroad in the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Akashvani tomorrow 28 Oct (Sunday) . It will be the 115th episode of the monthly radio programme.

8. The filing of nominations ended yesterday for the first phase of assembly elections in Jharkhand. Forty-three constituencies will go to polls in this phase on the 13th of November. Former Chief Minister Champai Soren filed nomination from Saraikela.

9. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan has stressed the adoption of artificial intelligence tools to boost productivity and enhance governance.

10. Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh said that the recently approved BioE3 policy will be a game changer in the field of biotechnology and will lead the national bioeconomy to 300 billion dollars by 2030. Presiding over the Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony between the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Indian Space Research Organisation in New Delhi, the Minister said that India is the first country in the world to have a bioeconomy policy.

11. The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) has announced a significant new initiative for central government pensioners aged 80 and older, introducing an additional pension known as the compassionate allowance.

12. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy announced an ambitious plan to develop Bapu Ghat at Langar Houz into a global centre of Gandhian ideology. He said that Bapu Ghat, situated at the confluence of Isa and Musa rivers, would soon receive water from the Godavari river as part of the Musi rejuvenation project, creating a “Triveni sangamam”.

13. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has convened a crucial Cabinet meeting at the Secretariat for Saturday, with a significant agenda focused on agricultural, revenue, and welfare schemes.

14. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for a range of development projects totaling Rs 7,160 crore. Among these initiatives are 2,615 panchayat government buildings spread across various blocks in the state and a new panchayat resource center in Sonepur, Saran district.

15. Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday hosted the second edition of the Tawang International Marathon, a global adventure event, at Tawang town in the border district.

16. The Government of India has appointed Dr. Neena Malhotra as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Sweden. Currently serving as an Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of External Affairs, Dr. Malhotra is an esteemed Indian Foreign Service officer from the 1992 batch.

In a significant step to bolster entrepreneurship in India’s Northeast, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong has partnered with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI). Through its IIM Shillong Foundation for Incubation and Enterprise (IIMSFIE), this collaboration introduces a structured entrepreneurship training and incubation programme.

1. Chief Justice of India, Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has said that various measures have been adopted to make Courts’ accessible for persons with disabilities. He highlighted the initiative wherein for the first time the Supreme Court introduced sign language interpreters for lawyers with speech and hearing impairment.

2. Supreme Court on Friday said a doctor can be held liable for negligence only when there was no requisite qualification and skill, or a failure to exercise reasonable expertise during treatment.

3. The Delhi police arrested a 19-year-old associate of gangster Himanshu Bhau in connection with the murder of a man at Burger King in Rajouri Garden area of west Delhi. Annu Dhankar, who police referred to as ‘Lady Don’, was nabbed near the Indo-Nepal border in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh. During investigation, Annu Dhankar emerged as woman who had lured Aman through social Media to be friends with her and was sitting with him at the eatery when he was shot dead.

4. The Andhra Pradesh High Court concluded its hearings on a petition filed by actor Allu Arjun and former MLA Ravichandra Kishore Reddy, seeking to quash the FIR lodged against them for violating the election code. The court will announce its verdict on November 6.

5. A rendition of ‘Tamil Thai Vaazhthu’, the anthem of Tamil Nadu, was caught in a controversy yet again, as singers at a government function held at the Secretariat on Friday struggled to get the verse right more than once. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who was the chief guest, however, maintained that there were some “technical fault” and the mike did not function properly.

1. The European Investment Bank has announced it will provide a loan of 2,800 crore rupees for the Bengaluru suburban railway. The bank has also launched a technical assistance hub for urban mobility solutions. The Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Nicola Beer, and the Director of Finance of the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development, Awadhesh Maheta, announced this in Gandhinagar.

2. The Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, is set to launch the 21st Livestock Census operation, a significant initiative aimed at gathering comprehensive data on India’s livestock sector. The launch event is scheduled for October 25, 2024 at Hotel Leela Ambience Convention in Shahdara.

3. Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has teamed up with US chipmaker Nvidia to establish AI infrastructure in India, announced during the Nvidia AI Summit 2024 in Mumbai. This collaboration aims to position India as a leading intelligence market, with plans to deploy Nvidia’s GB 200 supercomputer technology for large-scale AI capabilities.

4. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a USD 434.25 million loan to support Assam’s renewable energy ambitions by constructing a 500 MW grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in the Karbi Anglong district. The Assam Solar Project aims to significantly enhance the state’s renewable energy capacity, bolstering energy security and promoting sustainable energy development in the region.

The 18th edition of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) Film Bazaar has announced its official selection for the co-production market, featuring 21 feature films and eight web series from seven countries. Film Bazaar is also organised every year in Goa alongside the International Film Festival of India. This year, the Film Bazaar will be held from the 20th to the 24th of next month.

2. In a relief to actor Rhea Chakraborty and her family, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision to cancel CBI’s lookout circular issued against them following Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

1. Indian and Chinese troops have commenced the disengagement process in the Depsang and Demchok regions of eastern Ladakh, after four and a half years of military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The disengagement process began on 22nd October, with both armies removing temporary tents and dismantling structures in the Depsang and Demchok areas.

2. Lieutenant General M.V. Suchindra Kumar, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command said diplomatic and military discussions have facilitated a broad consensus to restore the situation on the ground. Border patrolling will resume by the end of this month, marking a significant step toward restoring normalcy in the region.

3. The second edition of the Indian Army’s flagship international seminar, the Chanakya Defence Dialogue, culminated in Delhi yesterday. This two-day event brought together policymakers, strategic thinkers, academia, defence personnel, veterans, scientists, and subject matter experts from India and abroad to examine India’s strategic directions and developmental priorities. Prominent speakers from India, the United States, Russia, Israel, and Sri Lanka offered a global perspective on how security influences India’s developmental trajectory toward Viksit Bharat in 2047.
