1. Omar Abdullah, a prominent leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), has been sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant political transition in the region.

2. Senior BJP Leader Nayab Singh will take oath as Chief Minister for the second time today. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Shalimar Ground in Panchkula. PM Modi will attend ceremony.

3. Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti 2024 is celebrated today on Ashwin Purnima, which this year falls on October 17. Maharishi (great sage) Valmiki is hailed as the author of the oldest version of Ramayana — the story of Sree Ram. Valmiki Jayanti, also known as Pargat Diwas (Pargat means birth).

4. The government gave nod to increase the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for rabi crops for marketing season 2025-26. Information And Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed media about the Cabinet decisions taken under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

9. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has started an ambitious National Electricity Plan (Transmission). This plan aims to increase India’s renewable energy capacity significantly. It sets a target of 500 GW (gigawatts) of renewable energy by 2030.

Voters in Mumbai will not be allowed to carry mobile phones inside the polling booths at the time of voting during the next month’s Maharashtra assembly elections, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner and administrator Bhushan Gagrani said. Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra legislative assembly will be held in a single phase on November 20, and votes will be counted on November 23.

14. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will fight the Maharashtra assembly elections on its own, without any alliance, said party chief Raj Thackeray on Wednesday.

1. The Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the BJP-led central government to withdraw the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, which was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August and subsequently referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). The state’s lawmakers expressed concerns over the bill, asserting that it could undermine the autonomy of Waqf boards and the management of Waqf properties.

2. New rules were introduced for people applying for Aadhaar, India’s unique identification number. These changes affect Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). Now, anyone over 18 must prove that they have stayed in India for at least 182 days during the previous year to qualify for Aadhaar enrolment.

The verification of residency is now handled by Revenue officials, similar to how passport checks are done.

3. The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Punjab and Haryana governments over the non-prosecution of violators found guilty of stubble burning while summoning the state chief secretaries to appear before it on October 23 for an explanation.

4. Nine flights received bomb threats and the total count has climbed to at least 19 in three days. The threats have turned out to be a hoax. On Wednesday, bomb threats were received by four IndiGo flights, two SpiceJet flights and one flight of Akasa Air.

A 17-year-old boy from Chhattisgarh was detained by Mumbai Police in connection with bomb hoax threats posted on social media targeting three flights on October 14.

1. State-owned BEML has been awarded a contract worth ₹866.87 crore by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) to design, manufacture, and commission India’s first indigenously built bullet trains. This project marks a significant milestone in India’s high-speed rail journey, as it will feature two high-speed trainsets, each comprising eight cars, with a test speed of 280 km/h and an operational speed of 250 km/h. The trains are set to roll out by late 2026, produced at BEML’s Bengaluru .

2. Safran Data Systems (SDS) has expanded its footprint in India with the inauguration of a new state-of-the-art facility in Chennai.
