Jammu and Kashmir: National Conference Approves Leader In a significant political decision, the National Conference (NC) has chosen Omar Abdullah as its leader of the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Legislature Party. This is the post culmination of the J&K Assembly elections wherein four independent candidates were supporting the NC. This has further consolidated the NC’s position as its tally stands at 46. The Congress has six seats, and one CPI(M) legislator, thereby further consolidating their alliance to form the government.
Omar Abdullah, former CM of J&K, will meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tomorrow to stake his claim for the Chief Minister post. Backed by the INDIA alliance, Abdullah is likely to meet the Congress to formalize the letter of support, which he is likely to hand over soon. The Congress Legislature Party has scheduled a meeting to discuss the further course of the alliance and seal Abdullah’s candidature for the top job.
Promise of bringing back Article 370
Article 370 and Assurances Omar Abdullah-led NC promised to bring back Article 370, which was revoked on August 2019. The party reaffirmed its commitment to keep the issue alive and push for the restoration of rights taken away from residents of J&K. Abdullah is realistic about the battles ahead but remains vociferous about his party’s stand on the issue. Convener of the NC, Omar Abdullah, said on Thursday that senior NC leaders have confirmed to him that delivering on election promises and getting Article 370 back would be one of the top priorities once the government was in place.
The support of CONGRESS PARTY
Given the party as well as the Congress’s backing, Omar Abdullah can now hope to make a return to the Chief Minister’s office. The National Conference and its allies are convinced of their potential to form a stable government in Jammu and Kashmir and to find solutions to the problems the region is facing.
This is the most critical juncture in Jammu and Kashmir’s political scene wherein the state will see a change in administration with the National Conference at the helm.
