The World Skate Games Italia 2024 culminated in an exhilarating finale, showcasing the global rise of sports on skating wheels. With 12,000 athletes and teams from 90 countries involved and 154 world titles awarded, the event captivated thousands of spectators and millions of fans across social media, highlighting the extraordinary popularity of these sports. The event began on September 6 with a grand Opening Ceremony at the iconic Spanish Steps in the earth of Rome.
22 World Championships took place across 10 different cities in four Italian regions: Rome served as the hub for Urban sports, Abruzzo hosted Speed and team events, Rimini showcased Artistic competitions, and Novara, honoring its century-old tradition, was the center for rink hockey.
In Rome’s urban arena, the iconic Colle Oppio Skatepark hosted the Skateboarding Street competitions during the first week, where Brazil’s Rayssa Leal was crowned women’s world champion and Japan’s Toa Sasaki took the men’s title.
In the second week, under the shadow of the Colosseum, the park welcomed the Roller Freestyle and Scootering Street World Championships. With the ancient landmark as a stunning backdrop, the finals showcased the world’s top talents. Brazilian Ana Julia Da Silva claimed victory in Women’s Street, while French skater Julien Cudot made history by becoming the first to win both Park and Street titles in the same year. His breathtaking performances, including an incredible 450 backside Savannah, electrified the audience.
Scootering wrapped up its event on Saturday night, September 21st, at Colle Oppio Park, beneath the glowing arches of the Colosseum. Top athletes from around the world battled it out for the coveted Scootering Street World Championship titles. The crowd was buzzing with anticipation, and the athletes did not disappoint, delivering a night of jaw-dropping tricks, fierce competition, and history-making moments.
In the highly anticipated Women’s World Championship, American Mia Catalano successfully defended her title, making history as the first back-to-back Women’s Street World Champion.
The night’s grand finale was the Men’s Street Final, and when the dust settled, France’s Lucas Di Meglio emerged victorious, claiming his second consecutive World Championship title and becoming the first-ever Men’s Street rider to win back-to-back golds.
The prestigious Pincio Terrace, with its sweeping views of the Eternal City, hosted five different sports. It kicked off with Vert skateboarding, where Rome’s spectators celebrated two new world champions: Arisa Trew (AUS), a gold medalist in Paris, and Gui Khury (BRA). The thrilling skate cross races through Villa Borghese, combined with the technical and flawless performances in inline freestyle, delivered seven days of pure excitement and camaraderie in this remarkable location.
The final event, the Vert Roller Freestyle World Championships, brought an exhilarating conclusion to the games at the picturesque Pincio Terrace. Japanese skater Kaho Miyao reaffirmed her champion status with a flawless performance, while Takeshi Yasutoko showcased his dominance once again, securing his second consecutive world title. This event highlighted the power and beauty of freestyle, captivating the entire audience.
Ostia was the third location in Rome with its renowned ‘The Spot’ skatepark. Here the park competitions of Scootering Roller freestyle and Skateboarding took place one after another.
For two weeks, residents of this coastal area of Rome experienced an exhilarating display of adrenaline and spectacle.
The Skateboarding Park finals in Ostia highlighted the athletes’ exceptional skills, with a double victory for Brazil showcasing the nation’s strength and versatility on the international stage. Raicca Ventura and Hinano Kusaki excelled in the women’s competition, while Augusto Akio took the men’s title, followed by Pedro Barros and Viktor Solmunde.
In Abruzzo, the Speed World Championships ignited the cities of Montesilvano and Sulmona with thrilling track and road competitions, showcasing the dominance of Colombia and Italy.
Pescara’s waterfront was the backdrop for intense 100m speed skating races. Young Sofia Chiumiento emerged victorious in the Junior Women’s final, while Cristian Scassellati claimed gold in the Junior Men’s category. In the senior events, Spanish sensation Jhoan Guzman secured gold in the men’s race, and Ivonne Nochez Gallardo reinforced her dominance in the women’s category.
Also starting in Pescara was the World Skate Marathon Tour’s Open Marathon, where over 800 skaters glided along the picturesque Adriatic coastline. It was an exhilarating spectacle that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. French skater Nolan Beddiaf dominated the men’s race, securing gold for the fourth time at the WSG event, while Colombian Luz Karime Garzón triumphed in the women’s race, both delivering thrilling performances.
The excitement continued in the Downhill category, where athletes tackled adrenaline-pumping courses in Tortoreto. Harry Clarke from Australia claimed gold in Men’s Downhill Skateboarding, while Selina Theiler from Switzerland took first place in the women’s competition. In Men’s Downhill Inline, Italian Renato Pennuti won gold, followed by Colombian Juan Barrera in second place and Spain’s Pedro Soler in third.
In Men’s Street Luge, Spain’s Mikel Echegaray Diez made an incredible last-minute overtake to secure first place, while Ryan Farmer from the USA took home the silver and Abdil Mahdzan from Malaysia claimed the bronze.
The Roller Derby competitions in Montesilvano saw victories for the USA in both the women’s and men’s events, with Australia earning the silver medal and India and China capturing bronze in their respective categories.
In the hilltop city of Chieti, the Inline slalom and Skateboarding slalom events featured strong performances from Italian and German athletes in inline, while American competitors led the way in slalom, showcasing both legends and newcomers.
At the Inline Hockey World Championships, Spain claimed the junior women’s world title, while the USA triumphed in the senior women’s competition.
Slovakia dominated the junior men’s event, and in the senior men’s final held in Roccaraso, the USA secured victory against Czechia, with Italy celebrating a bronze medal.
Artistic skating also concluded on a high note in Rimini, captivating nearly 4,600 fans with breathtaking choreography. The competitions were filled with poignant moments and emotional stories, highlighting the passion that unites skaters worldwide. Italy shone in artistic skating, achieving remarkable victories, including freeskating titles won by Alessandro Liberatore and Benedetta. Portugal secured the junior women’s freeskating title with star skater Madalena Costa, while Spain took home the junior men’s title with the talented Guillermo Gomez. Italy also won gold in the Precision category, while Spain consistently excelled in the Big Shows Quartet and Show Groups categories, finishing on the podium with extraordinary performances. Olot, representing Spain, once again claimed the world title in the Big Groups with a stunning show.
In Novara, the Rink Hockey finals took place, where Spain claimed its 18th title as World Champion by defeating Argentina. Italy celebrated a historic bronze medal after beating Portugal, marking their return to the podium after 21 years.
