1. The President Smt. Droupadi Murmu highlights growth of India’s space sector on National Space Day (23 Aug). The Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat, India, has reached full operational capacity with its second 700 MW nuclear reactor , KAPS-4, which started operating at full power on 21 August 2024. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) confirmed that Unit 4 at KAPS was previously operating at 90% capacity before reaching its full 700 MW output.

4. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched ‘Create in India Challenge-Season One’ in New Delhi on August 22 in the run-up to the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit ( WAVES).

5. Kaanu, a South Indian Adivasi Knowledge Centre, will be launched at the Tribal Health Resource Centre (THRC) at BR Hills, Karnataka on August 25. Prashanth N. Srinivas, a medical doctor and public health researcher working at the Institute of Public Health, Bangalore’s field station in B.R. Hills, says that Kaanu, which means evergreen forest in both Kannada and Soliga language.

6. Telangana Seeks Funds For T-fiber Network : Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday requested the Centre to provide a Rs 1,779-crore interest-free long-term loan to the state government from the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), where Rs 78,000 crore is available, for providing affordable fibre optic-based internet service to 93 lakh households in the state.

1. The government has banned 156 medicines including antibiotics, painkillers, and multivitamins after a review found that they posed health risks. The Health Ministry in a notification said that the 156 fixed dose combination Medicines are irrational combinations.

2. The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud urged counsels for the Centre and West Bengal governments to not politicise the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case and stressed that the law is taking its course.

The Chief Justice made the observation during a heated exchange between Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta and Bengal government’s counsel Kapil Sibal during the hearing in Supreme Court.

3. The Calcutta high court on Friday ordered the transfer of the probe into the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of its former principal Sandip Ghosh from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

4. On August 23, the Sealdah Court had remanded 14 days of judicial custody of the main accused in the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The main accused, Sanjay Roy, will remain in judicial custody until 6 September 2024, under the supervision of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

5. A 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three persons in Assam’s Nagaon district, triggering massive protests by people on the streets. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promised that stern action would be taken against the perpetrators.

6. An offence under the SC-ST Act is not established merely on the fact that the complainant is a member of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe community unless there is an intention to humiliate, the Supreme Court said on Friday.

7. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has granted bail to former MLA Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy in two cases and imposed certain conditions.

No Maharashtra Bandh On August 24 After Bombay High Court’s Order : In view of the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s call for Maharashtra bandh on Saturday, the Bombay High Court on Friday restrained all political parties and individuals from calling for a strike in the state to protest against the tragic incident of sexual assault of two kindergarten girls in Thane’s Badlapur.

The High Court’s response came after Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray called for a strict observance of the “Maharashtra Bandh” on August 24 until 2 pm, with the exception of emergency services which should remain operational.

9. A day after the Congress and the National Conference (NC) announced an electoral alliance for the upcoming Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Congress of risking the country’s security “in its greed for power”.

Posting a series of 10 questions on X, Mr. Shah demanded to know whether the Congress agreed with several of the promises made in the NC’s manifesto, including a separate flag for J&K, the restoration of Article 370, and a review of reservations for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, and for other backward classes.

1. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday met United States Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin to review and further deepen the existing defence cooperation activities between the two countries.

2. India successfully conducted a night test of its nuclear-capable ballistic missile, Prithvi-II, from a defence facility off the Odisha coast on Thursday. Developed by DRDO, this missile is capable of striking targets with precision up to a distance of 350 kilometers.

3. A tactical drone of the Indian Army on Friday suffered a technical malfunction while flying over the Jammu sector and landed in Pakistan . Pakistan troops have recovered the drone, as per reports. The Indian Army has sent a message over the hotline to its Pakistani counterpart to return the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAB),
