1. Raksha Bandhan, the festival of special bond between brothers and sisters, will be celebrated across the country today, on 19 August, Monday : It is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Shravana. Raksha Bandhan literally means the bond of protection. It is also known as Rakhi in various parts of India. The President Smt. Droupadi Murmu has greeted people on the occasion.

2. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr. P. K. Mishra chaired a high-level meeting to review the status of preparedness for Mpox in the country and related public health measures. During the meeting, it was briefed that as of now, there is no reported case of Mpox in the country. As per the present assessment, the risk of a large outbreak with sustained transmission is low.

3. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched an innovative project to tackle the growing concern of microplastic contamination in food in New Delhi.

4. The much-awaited Namo Bharat Train also called the Rapid Train started its operations between Meerut South and Ghaziabad with the Regional Rapid Transit System yesterday. The train began its journey from Meerut South station and covered a distance of 42 km up to Sahibabad station in just 32 minutes.

5. A day before Rakshabandhan, Jharkhand Chief Minister, Hemant Soren launched “Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojana”. Launching this scheme at Pakur district, the Chief Minister transferred the first installment of one thousand rupees each to the bank accounts of over 57,000 beneficiaries through DBT. The ‘Mukhyamantri Maiya Samman Yojana’ aims to benefit 48 lakh women statewide.

6. Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Champai Soren has alleged that he was insulted in his party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. In an emotional post, he said that he was forced to resign from the post of Chief Minister when Hemant Soren was freed from jail. Champai Soren said he sacrificed for the strengthening of JMM but his emotions have been hurt.

7. The BJP will launch a new membership drive from the first of September. The party aims to add more than 10 crore new members during the drive. The BJP claims to have over 18 crore members, which makes it the world’s largest political party.

8. Sikkim Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang launched the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan during a special Raksha Bandhan programme organized by the Brahma Kumaris at Shakti Kund in Gangtok.

9. The Indian space station — Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS) — is expected to be set up and running by 2035, said Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology.

10. Senior Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra formally took over as president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee.

11. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is introducing electric super luxury buses in the state. The TSRTC has decided to operate these electric luxury buses on the Karimnagar-Hyderabad and Nizamabad-Hyderabad routes as part of the first phase. The buses, named e-Super Luxury, will enhance travel comfort while being eco-friendly.

12. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and West Bengal.

1. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the Kolkata rape and murder case and will hear the matter on Tuesday.

The CBI interrogated the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Kolkata Police imposed Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita around RG Kar Medical College for seven days to prevent unlawful gathering of five or more people in the area.

2. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to PM Modi regarding the incident at RG Kar Medical College and has sought his intervention to bring a central law to check violence against healthcare personnel. The IMA has demanded that the security protocols of all hospitals should be in line with airports. It also demanded that hospitals be declared as safe zones, with the first step being mandatory security entitlements.

3. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board said that a uniform or secular civil code is not acceptable to Muslims as they will never compromise with Sharia Law.

4. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of three lakh rupees on Sriram’s IAS for publishing false and misleading advertisement regarding the result of UPSC Civil Service Exam 2022.

1. In Uttar Pradesh, 10 people were killed and 37 injured in a bus accident. The bus collided with a pickup in Bulandshahr.

2. A fire broke out in the Engineering Section of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Administrative Building located in Tirupati. The TTD staff managed to extinguish the flames. Following the incident, Assistant Engineer Bhaskar filed a complaint, prompting the Alipiri police to register a case.

2. The Thangalaan has made a significant impact at the global box office, earning Rs 53.64 crores in its first two days. The film’s opening day saw a collection of Rs 26.44 crores, setting the tone for its successful run. 1. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre at Indian Coastal Guard Regional headquarters in Chennai.

The centre will facilitate coordination among countries within a region ensuring a unified approach to oil spill response. It can mobilise a more effective response to oil spills and provide access to specialised equipment trained personnel and technological innovations that maybe beyond the capabilities of individual countries.

2. The Indian Army has issued a significant tender worth approximately ₹6,500 crore for the procurement of 400 155 mm/52 calibre Towed Gun Systems (TGS). This initiative is part of the Army’s broader strategy to enhance its artillery capabilities with indigenously designed and manufactured systems, aligning with the Make in India initiative.

3. Indian Navy chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi visited the naval base INS Shivaji in Lonavala Maharashtra on Friday and inspected various training activities and facilities of the station.

3. Indian Coast Guard director general Rakesh Pal died at a government hospital in Chennai on Sunday following a cardiac arrest. He had taken charge as the 25th director general of the Indian Coast Guard on July 19 last year. He was to attend an ICG event along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
