1. PM Modi proposes a comprehensive Global development compact to assist Global South partner countries in achieving balanced and inclusive growth. The Prime Minister said this in his closing remarks of the 3rd Voice of the Global South virtual Summit.

2. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has urged Global South countries to work together as a family to facilitate the flow of low-cost financing and critical technologies.

3. A team of Indian students has secured three gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the 17th International Earth Sciences Olympiad held in Beijing, China. The Olympiad was held from the 8th to the 16th of this month. The four-member Indian team comprising students from Gujarat, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan won these medals in three different categories including Earth System Project, and International Team Filed Investigation.

1. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep concern over the rapid spread of Monkeypox or Mpox in Africa, calling for international support for the continent in its response to the ongoing outbreak.

2. Sudan’s Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim officially declared a cholera outbreak in the country. The announcement came shortly after the World Health Organization (WHO) said that about 316 people had died of cholera in Sudan.

3. Ten people were reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in the Nabatieh district of southern Lebanon. Military sources in Lebanon said several teams from the Civil Defense and the Islamic Health Authority, equipped with bulldozers and cranes, are still working to remove the rubble of the house, which was destroyed in the strike.

4. A human rights team from the United Nations will visit Dhaka next week to discuss with the Bangladesh interim government, investigations into the human rights violations during the recent unrest in Bangladesh.

5. The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Sweden became the first country outside of Africa to report a case of the emerging clade I variant of mpox, on 15 August 2024.

6. A Landslide and flood disrupts Nepal’s Araniko Highway and Thame Village. The road was blocked due to a landslide at Panchkhaal in Kaverapalanchok district.

The flood swept away 20 houses and lodges, a health post, and a school in Khumbu Pasanglhamu rural municipality. The powerhouse of the local power project was completely damaged while 200 meters of trekking route from Phakding to Namche Jame area have been washed away.

So far, a joint force of the Nepali Army and Nepal Police has rescued 93 people from the flood-affected areas and provided shelter in an army camp.
