1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast enhanced rainfall over Eastern and central parts of the country for the next 6 days. The Regional Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy rains for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and six other districts for another week.

4. The Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, is on a one day visit to Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District in Andhra Pradesh.

5. The BJP’s national office-bearers meeting was held in New Delhi to discuss the party’s membership drive. The meeting was chaired by party President J.P. Nadda. Union Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah, along with other senior party leaders.

6. Telangana govt to set up Young India Sports University in Hyderabad. : Taking inspiration from Korean National Sports University in Seoul during recent international trip, Telangana Chief minister Revanth Reddy proposed to set up an integrated sports hub.

7. India’s shipping ministry suggested constructing a seaport next to Bharat Petroleum Corp’s planned refinery in Andhra Pradesh to cut costs. The refinery could act as a key customer for the port. Andhra Pradesh proposed offering land at Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam, or Mulapeta for the complex.

8. In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced the creation of 3,000 new posts for Anganwadi workers and the opening of new recruitment opportunities for women. Addressing a gathering during a state-level function to mark the festival of Raksha Bandhan in Barnala.

9. The Union Cabinet has approved ₹2,962 crore in airport projects for West Bengal and Bihar. This includes a new airport in Bihta, Patna, costing ₹1,413 crore, to alleviate congestion at the existing Patna airport, and a ₹1,549 crore expansion of Bagdogra airport to address its near-full capacity.

10. In Haryana, four MLAs of the Jannayak Janta Party have resigned today from the party. The MLAs who resigned include Anoop Dhanak, Devendra Singh Babli, Ishwar Singh and Ramsharan.

11. In Uttarakhand, the trek route to Kedarnath, which suffered severe damage from landslides triggered by heavy rain, has been repaired and reopened to pilgrims after a 15-day closure. The 19-kilometer path, previously obstructed at 29 points by landslide debris, was cleared and reopened.

12. The Maharashtra Chief Minister will roll out the ‘Ladki Bahin‘ scheme modelled on the lines of Madhya Pradesh’s ‘Ladli Behna Yojana. The Chief Minister has guaranteed that their version of the scheme will not be temporary but will continue indefinitely.

This initiative aims to provide ₹1500 every month to more than one crore women across the state.

13. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Salee Sukumaran Nair as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) for a three-year term.

14. Himachal shuts 99 govt schools with no students : The Himachal Pradesh Government denotified 99 government primary and middle schools with zero enrolment. It also ordered merger of 419 schools, including 361 of the primary wing, with five or less students with the nearest schools.

15. The Odisha government on Friday appointed 1990 batch IPS officer Yogesh Bahadur Khurania as the new director general of police (DGP) of the state.

16. Raksha Bandhan, also referred to as Rakhi, will be celebrated across the country on Monday, August 19.

1. Medical services were affected througout the country as Doctors, medical professionals and students are staging 24 hour protest across the county on the call of the Indian Medical Association-IMA in protest of rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. Non-emergency and OPD services have been suspended.

2. In Maharashtra, doctors’ associations throughout the state joined the strike, leading to the suspension of patient services in many general hospitals. The BMC MARD, representing resident doctors from Sion, Nair, Cooper, and KEM hospitals in Mumbai, staged a protest at Azad Maidan.

3. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will conduct a psychological assessment of Sanjay Roy, the accused in a rape-and-murder case of a doctor in Kolkata that has triggered nationwide protests.

4. Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot granted sanction for prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) site allotment ‘scam’. The sanction is based on three petitions filed by T J Abraham, Pradeep and Snehamayi Krishna. Earlier, on 26 July.

5. Mobile internet was suspended for 24 hours in several areas of Rajasthan’s Udaipur and all schools were ordered to remain shut after a Class-10 student allegedly stabbed another boy at a government school, triggering communal violence in the city.

6. 26/11 accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana can be extradited: A court said . In a huge setback to Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a US court has ruled that the Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman could be extradited to India where he is wanted for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack carried out by Pakistan-based Lashkar terrorists.

7. The Kerala High Court has refused to interfere with a lower court order and directed filmmaker Major Ravi to face trial in a sexual harassment case filed by a journalist in the state.

The matter pertains to a speech made by Ravi in 2016 in which he allegedly made derogatory comments against a senior journalist of a prominent Malayalam TV channel. The court noted that the petitioner (Ravi) was an army officer and is a celebrity and it was the duty of such people to be careful while making speeches and statements.

1. Twenty coaches of the Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express passenger train derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur early Saturday after the engine hit an ‘object placed on the track’. There were no casualties in the derailment that occurred between Kanpur and Bhimsen railway stations at around 2.35 am.

2. A portion of an under-construction bridge in Bihar, which was being ‘dismantled’, crashed into the river Ganges river on Saturday, Video footage of a slab of the bridge, connecting Bhagalpur and Khagaria districts, has gone viral on social media.

1. First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Dr Gita Gopinath has said that India’s growth did much better than expected during the last fiscal year 2023-24 and the country is expected to become the third-largest economy of the world by 2027.

2. India has reduced the windfall tax on crude oil to Rs 2,100 per tonne from Rs 4,600, effective August 17, and eliminated the tax on diesel and aviation turbine fuel exports. This adjustment, which follows a previous tax cut, aims to address the preference of private refiners for international sales.

3. Foreign direct investment (FDI) in India’s food processing sector experienced a significant decline of 30% in the fiscal year 2023-24, totaling Rs 5,037.06 crore, down from Rs 7,194.13 crore in 2022-23.

4. India has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into the import of hot rolled flat products from Vietnam following complaints that these products are being sold at significantly low prices, negatively impacting the domestic steel industry. The move, driven by requests from leading Indian steelmakers such as JSW Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India).

1. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate a new state-of-the-art Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the Indian Coast Guard during his visit to Chennai today. He will also inaugurate the Marine Pollution Response Centre in Chennai and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry.

2. The Cabinet has approved the construction of a second airport at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Bihta, Patna, with an estimated cost of ₹1,413 crore. This new civil enclave will help alleviate capacity constraints at the existing Patna airport. The new terminal, covering 66,000 square meters, will have a peak capacity to handle 3,000 passengers per hour.

3. The Indian Air Force and the Indian Army successfully paradropped a homegrown portable hospital from 15,000 feet, Known as the Aarogya Maitri Health Cube, these homegrown trauma care “cubes” – “the world’s first portable hospital” – are used to set up trauma care facilities on the field, thus saving lives in even the most remote areas.

The “cubes” were developed under Project BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri).
