Heavy rain in the national capital for a day on Friday turned life around, forcing commuters to be stranded on the roads and city services into disarray. From kilometres-long traffic jams to flight operations being delayed and metro services getting disrupted, Delhi witnessed one of the most hectic mornings this season.
Traffic Congestion On Key Routes
The rain, which started in the early morning hours, soon overwhelmed the city streets. A number of key stretches like Ring Road, ITO, and parts of NH-48 saw large traffic jams as waterlogging slowed down traffic movement to a halt. Office-goers were trapped in their cars and buses for hours, with many reporting more than two-hour delays in reaching their workplaces. Photos posted on social media revealed cars stranded in waist-high water, with traffic police scrambling to cope with the massive buildup.
Waterlogging Increases Commuters’ Suffering
Low-lying areas of South Delhi, Dwarka, and East Delhi were the worst affected. In some localities, water levels surged high enough to pour into shops and ground-floor homes. Motorcyclists and auto-rickshaw operators suffered the most, with many vehicles developing mechanical problems in the middle of roads. People were angry, noting that every year there were promises of a better drainage system, yet the city still experiences the same issues with every monsoon season.
Flight Operations Impacted
The rain also had a cascading effect on air travel. At Indira Gandhi International Airport, several flights were delayed because bad weather reduced visibility and waterlogging in connecting roads hindered passenger movement. Several airlines issued notices requesting travelers to check flight statuses prior to arrival at the airport. Passengers who were stranded tweeted their stories, with some registering complaints of delayed connections due to road traffic delays.
Metro Services Impacted
Contributing to the mayhem, parts of the Delhi Metro system registered disruptions. Services on the Blue Line and Yellow Line were delayed because of technical issues brought about by water seepage in some areas around specific stations. As people accumulated on platforms, metro officials asked commuters to remain patient and not crowd entry gates. Most commuters who rely on the metro on a daily basis were compelled to seek out other means of travel, clogging already congested roads.
Government and Civic Response
The authorities have assured people that efforts are being made to revive normalcy. The Delhi Traffic Police provided live traffic updates on diversions, while the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation sent teams to rectify technical faults. Civic authorities were observed mobilizing pumps in water-logged areas, although residents claimed that the response was delayed and insufficient.
The heavy rains have once again highlighted Delhi’s fragile infrastructure when faced with sudden weather extremes. For many citizens, it was not just another rainy day but a stark reminder of how unprepared the city remains to handle the monsoon season. With more showers expected in the coming week, commuters are bracing themselves for continued disruptions unless swift measures are taken.
