Cyclone Fengal is building over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to make landfall tomorrow, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone is likely to hit Puducherry and Chennai, bringing heavy rains and gusty winds to the region. The two coastal areas are on high alert as authorities prepare for the impact.
IMD officials have predicted that Cyclone Fengal will cross the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast tomorrow evening, with wind speeds of around 80-100 km/h. It will weaken slightly after reaching land but can continue to cause severe damage to affected areas.
Precautionary measures in place
As a precaution, the Puducherry and Tamil Nadu governments have declared holidays for schools and colleges in sensitive districts. Fishermen are advised not to venture out to sea, and those at sea are being called back to safety. Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed at appropriate locations to deal with any problems.
Evacuation and humanitarian preparedness
Local authorities have begun evacuating residents from flood-prone areas. Relief camps have been set up in Chennai, Puducherry, and surrounding areas to accommodate the affected. Officials ensure adequate access to food, water, and medical assistance in these camps.
Transmission lines in coastal areas are being strengthened to minimize disruption during storms. Hospitals and emergency services were established, and state governments are providing aids for health improvements.
