Surface: A film from Underneath (2009) by Varathit Uthaisri

Surface A film from Underneath 2009

Watching the dramas of daily life unfold from underneath the surface.

This week’s featured short film takes our overarching theme of ‘finding new perspectives’ quite literally. Made at the Parsons New School of Design, this experimental film elevates mundane human activities into an extraordinary visual treat. Apart from the shift in perspective, the soundscape of the film is noteworthy.

Sounds of each object and action create harmonious beats, which become building blocks for a grand emotional journey. We recommend watching this 3-minute long film twice – once with the sound off, and once with the sound on – to understand the power of sound in film.
