“No Crying At The Dinner Table” (2019) by Carol Nguyen

no crying at the dinner table 1

While documenting a person’s real life story, the person becomes the Subject, while you become the Director/Storyteller. The relationship between the two is interdependent, and yet there is a distance between the two. The Storyteller tries to maintain objectivity while the Subject navigates and negotiates the thin lines between fact and memory, truth and imagination.

The Storyteller can often be found looking at the private lives of strangers, or celebrities, but what happens when she turns the lens around and looks at her own family?
