This film takes inspiration from the poetry of the 18th century Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, widely held to be the greatest Sufi poet of the Sindhi language.
This week we take a break from fiction and non-fiction stories, and look towards poetry to nourish our souls. This wondrous, artful film about the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai is interwoven with oral histories and magical folk tales.
The poetry, drenched in lovers’ lamentation, talks of a time when sailors went away for trade, leaving behind loved ones. The poet talks of those who left and never came back. The film draws parallels between this painful experience of separation and those who continue to feel separated by (India-Pakistan) borders. Times may have changed but, even today, the words of the poet ring true.
The profound ideas of the sufi poet are matched with beautiful artwork & animation and a layered sound design. What shines brightest is the soundtrack, with gentle, rhythmic music and a soulful voice. This film is a sensory experience, meant to transport the viewer to a place more pure and true.
Bon Voyage!
Note: This film is a part of the Kabir Project’s Lockdown Film Series called ‘Ajab Mulakaatein’. Read more about them in the YouTube description.
