A mixed media illustrated short film telling the history of anti-Asian racism and violence in the U.S

This week we continue to engage with stories about the immigrant experience. The pandemic brought with it what seemed like a fresh wave of racism against Asian Americans. This film sheds light on how this is nothing new. The aggression stems from a long history of racist beliefs against Asians in America.

Sally Tran works with a combination of illustrated cutouts and in-camera filming. Though easy to miss, this unique mix of media creates an attractive aesthetic. The film leans heavily on vibrant audio montages using archival sound, music, sound effects and voice-over to tell the story. It is evident by the creative choices that the film is targeting a young audience.

In less than four minutes, the film succeeds in creating a nifty time capsule, connecting historical context to present-day events. It even establishes a clear call-to-action – to ensure a better future, education and understand history are essential. This is a lesson we can all learn from.
