Saachi Baat Special
The Little Master turns 75 today and birthday celebrations are on, not just in India, but also in London. For this generation which may wonder who is the Little Master, there was and is only one master, Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian star batsman turned celebrity commentator.
Since the time, SMG – Sunil Manohar Gavaskar — made his debut in 1971 in the West Indies, against the fastest and most ferocious fast bowling attack in the world, he has been an artist and a perfectionist. That he took on world class bowlers, pace and spin, across different continents in the world made him famous. His captaincy may not have been as illustrious as MS Dhoni, or, now, Rohit Sharma. Yet, for the Bombay (now Mumbai) khadoos, Sunny G, as co-commentators now address him, had led India to a memorable triumph at a major event in Australia in 1985. To say that Gavaskar had transformed himself from a Test batsman to even a white ball cricketer is a tribute to how he had made changes.
But the big shift has been how Sunny G has evolved as an expert, in writing columns and a TV commentator. Cricketers from erstwhile Bombay were passionate, intense and supported each other. From playing for Dadar Union and then Nirlons to changing his roles, for Gavaskar to be still relevant, today, in world cricket is amazing. After all, 75 years have been spent in cricket.
If he was the master of the square drive and cut, he was fearless and never wore a helmet for many years while facing the furious speed merchants. It is that same daring he shows as a commentator where he does not mind being critical of even a Virat Kohli when he does not do well. For those who say Gavaskar is opinionated and has strong views, that is his persona. It will not change. If there is consistency in him, it is multi-faceted. He has many dimensions and to be part of world cricket even today and cut his 75th birthday cake in London today is special. Sunny Days are here again.
