Athletes sporting a tattoo is something very common these days. Some like famous football star Lionel Messi have it all over the body while his rival CR7 – Cristiano Ronaldo – does not have a single one on his body. If you look at the most famous cricketers like current T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav or Virat Kohli, they have multiple tattoos.

A day before the Paralympics begins in Paris, the athletes who are to take part got a massive relief as the International Paralympic Committee allowed them to sport the tattoo. How and why this change in decision happened in not important. For the Para athletes, it is a status symbol and sporting the Olympic ring on their bodies makes them feel special. In the past, the Para athletes had to cover the tatoo with a patch but will but need to do so in Paris over the next fortnight.

In fact, Paralympians risked disqualification if their body had a tattoo. The athletes’ community has welcomed the decision as they go about preparations in Paris at the last-minute. “Athletes with such tattoos do not need to cover them up,” Craig Spence, the chief brand and communications officer for the IPC, said on Friday. “There is no clear or obvious reason for the change in policy. Whatever the reasoning behind the decision and how it was reached, it has been welcomed,” he said.

“Paralympic athletes have enough to worry about,” said USA’s Rudy Garcia-Tolson, 35, a swimmer and five-time Paralympic medalist who, in recent years, had resorted to using a marker to blot out the tattoo on his upper back. “Having a logo on our bodies that signifies our journey, our experience as athletes — it’s important to so many of us,” Rudy said recently.

For decades, the Olympics and the Paralympics have appeared to be a conjoined event. Starting with the Seoul 1998, the Paralympics have been held in the same host city as the Summer Olympics.
