Vinesh Phogat fought with vengeance and like a wounded tigress to enter the 50kg final at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday. On a day when she had to win three bouts, the best was in the first one where she took down Yui Susaki. From there on, Vinesh did not yield an inch on the mat and has created history. She will be the first Indian wrestler to fight for a gold medal today, August 7.
All day long, Vinesh was in a fiery mood. Even after her last bout win, she was back to skipping ropes and training. Her entire support staff which comprises a medical tea, physios, masseur and doctors have kept her in prime shape. To come down to the 50kg weight category was in itself a miracle. How she did it is crazy but that is her determination.
She has been through two major surgeries and each time she has bounced back like a wounded tigress. For all those who said at 29 she was past prime, the wins in Paris have shown she is a different level altogether. On Wednesday evening, she will be more than ready. She would have got proper rest, sleep and be ready for the gold medal match.
How Vinesh has preserved herself in such good shape and was energetic is a brilliant story. Her pain and problems began in the Rio Olympics in 2016. The Tokyo campaign was also a disaster. But then, fighting with feel and fluency and not trying to be defensive even once, Vinesh won three bouts on Tuesday. She has assured India of a fourth medal in the Paris Olympics and this is indeed going to be emotional.
Vinesh Phogat laughed at the form book where she showed nothing matters to her. Vinesh looked down and out, as Susaki, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist and multiple World Championship superstar was leading, initially. Then, in one stunning bit of action, Vinesh attacked Susaki and pinned her down to force a 3-2 win. This was the most crucial win.
