2. India’s ace shuttler Lakshya Sen defeated Japan’s Nishimoto Kenta to reach the Men’s Singles quarter-finals of the India Open Badminton tournament in New Delhi yesterday. Lakshya defeated Nishimoto in straight games 21-19, 21-10 in a Round of 16 match.

In the India Open Badminton tournament, former world number one Kidambi Srikanth secured a hard-fought victory over fellow Indian Tharun Mannepalli by 15-21, 21-6, and 21-19 in the Men’s Singles round of 32. The India Open Badminton tournament has started at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi (13 Jan -18 Jan).

4. President Droupadi Murmu has invited the Captain of the Indian Blind Cricket Team, Deepika, to attend the Republic Day celebrations this year in New Delhi. Postal officers visited Deepika’s native village Tambalahatti in Amarapuram mandal of Sri Sathya Sai district, Andhra Pradesh and handed over the invitation to her.

5. Australia Women’s cricket team captain Alyssa Healy has announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. The 35-year-old made the announcement on a podcast, citing mental fatigue and recurring injuries as key reasons behind her decision.

Bangladesh cricket plunged deeper into crisis as the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh demanded the immediate resignation of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director and Finance Committee chairman M Najmul Islam, threatening a complete boycott of all matches from 15 Jan 2026 if he fails to step down.
