The Men In Blue will be landing in New Delhi at 6am on Thursday morning at the IG airport with the proud World Cup to show. After defeating South Africa in the final on Saturday in the ICC T20 World Cup, the return flight on Monday was cancelled due to a hurricane. It was efforts from BCCI secretary Jay Shah which enabled the team to fly out of Bridgetown, Barbados, on Wednesday morning. The long flight is a chartered one, with the proud logo of Air India.
Speaking to this website from the airport, some of the media covering the World Cup in Barbados said the long wait was one of anxiety. “We wanted to return home as the bad weather was restricting our movement in the hotel,” said a writer.
On Thursday, the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on Thursday. No details are available. A massive reception has also been planned in Mumbai, which is the headquarters of the BCCI. It is learnt the players and the World Cup will be seen, though security is a major concern.
Three key players from India, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from the T20 internationals. At the same time, coach Rahul Dravid has also said goodbye. This World Cup was his last assignment. He had led India to three finals in the last one year, which includes the ICC Test Championship, the ODI World Cup and now the T20 World Cup.
Security at the IG airport in New Delhi will be very high. It is believed the team will travel to a five-star hotel in South Delhi from the airport. After rest and some amount of recovery, they will have an audience with PM Modi. For the record, after the win, Mr Modi had spoken to some of the players in the West Indies.
The Prime Minister has been very supportive of all sports, cricket included.
