Swapnil Kushale fired on the big stage in the men’s 3 position rifle event to win a historic bronze medal for India at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Thursday. For the second day in a row, the youngster from Pune ensured his pulse rate was low and he entered the final hall with a swagger.
“I felt a lot of pressure but am glad to win a bronze medal for my country,” said Swapnil. There were three parts in the final, kneeling, prone and standing. Indeed, the last part, where he stood and shot was a treat to watch. The way the shooters were going big, Swapnil needed to stick to the basics.
Immediately after the mixed zone interaction, Swapnil called his coach personal coach Deepali Desphande. “Madam has helped me in drilling the fundamentals from the beginning,” said Swapnil. Working for the Indian Railways, Swapnil just has to shoot and not worry about going to office. “I am thankful to the Railways they give me enough time to train. This medal is for India and I am proud I could handle the pressure,” added Swapnil.
Replying to a question, Swapnil spoke lavishly on his coach. “I have been training with Madam since 2012. She knows me so well, Madam is like a mother to me,” said Swapnil. He did miss Deepali as she was not cleared to travel to Paris by the NRAI (National Rifle Association of India).
The final hall was high energy and hot. The shooting jacket increases the body temperature but Swapnil did not have any problems in dealing with the conditions. “I just focused on my shooting,” said the boy who is a Ganesha devotee.
