February 24, 2025, Bengaluru, India: Nikhil Patil, a Mumbai-based photographer, won the inaugural Indian Sports Photography Awards (ISPA) 2025, taking home the top honor for his stunning capture of Sunil Chhetri’s iconic 100th match for the Indian national team. It was held at the Bangalore International Centre, celebrating the finest visual storytellers in Indian sports.

The second & third spots were claimed by Neha Ganeriwal, awarded in the Women in Sports category, and Sandeep Parshuram Pangerkar, recognized in Cricket.

The judging panel, led by Olympic medalist Gagan Narang, faced the difficult task of selecting winners from an exceptional pool of entries. Though unable to attend in person, Narang’s fellow juror, renowned sports journalist Sharda Ugra, announced the winners on his behalf.

Gagan Narang, Olympic Medalist said, “Sports photography is more than just capturing action; it’s about freezing moments that tell a story, inspire generations, and celebrate the spirit of sport. The winners today have done exactly that—each frame speaks volumes.”

Speaking on each winning image, he added, ”Simon Biles picture captures difficult moments and makes our imagination work hard to think how and what kind of efforts are taken by a sportsperson in their careers. Sunil Chettri thanking the crowd is an iconic moment of grit determination, dedication and passion. The cricket picture has a wow factor showing all subjects in mid-air. All images brilliantly capture the lives of athletes, which are always in motion.”

Paul R, Founder, Positive Sports Vibe Community & the inspiration behind ISPA said, “ISPA was born from a vision to honor those who bring sports to life through their lens. This inaugural edition has set the stage for a new tradition of recognizing the power of sports photography in India. The talent we’ve seen is just the beginning of something incredible.”

The success of ISPA 2025 marks a significant step in acknowledging the efforts of Indian sports photographers, with the event already poised to become an annual celebration of the country’s finest visual storytellers.
