1. Malaysia Open: Sindhu, Kashyap win; Saina loses:
Indian badminton stalwarts P V Sindhu and Saina Nehwal suffered contrasting fortunes at the Malaysia Open Super 750 tournament, the former progressing to the second round and the latter bowing out after losing her opener in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday.
Sindhu, dished out a fine performance to outwit Thailand’s world No. 10 Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-13, 21-17.
Former Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap also made a positive return from injury, prevailing over 21-12, 21-17 over Korea’s Heo Kwang Hee to advance to the second round in the men’s singles.
2. *WIMBLEDON* : Novak Djokovic of Serbia registers a straight set win over Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round. In a one sided match Djokovic beat Kokkinakis by 6-1,6-4,6-2 in Men’s Singles.
3. Hockey India on Tuesday mourned the demise of the 75-year-old Varinder Singh, who was part of Indian hockey’s glorious past. He passed away in Jalandhar in the early hours on Tuesday morning. The two-time Olympian was an integral part of India’s various memorable victories in the 1970s.
