1. Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Friday scripted history as he became the first Indian to clinch a Diamond League Meeting title by winning the Lausanne leg.
2. The 89.08m throw was his third career-best effort. His second throw measured 85.18m before passing on his third attempt.
Before Chopra, discus thrower Vikas Gowda is the only Indian to have finished in top-three in a Diamond League Meet. Gowda had finished second twice — in New York in 2012 and in Doha in 2014 — and third on two occasions — Shanghai and Eugene in 2015.
3. The Asia Cup 2022 will kick off tomorrow with a match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. On the other hand, defending champions India will kick-start its campaign with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan on 28th August.
4. The first Khelo India WomenтАЩs Judo Tournament will start from 27 of this month. The tournament will be held across four zones in the country. The national round will be held from 20th to 23rd October.
5. Linthoi Chanambam, a 16-year-old judoka from Manipur, has become the first-ever Indian to become judo world champion. Linthoi defeated Brazil’s Bianca Reis in women’s 57-kg category final at Cadet World Championships 2022 on Friday. She scripted history by becoming the world champion by winning India’s first-ever gold medal at the Worlds across any age group.
6. World football governing body FIFA has lifted the ban on All India Football Federation (AIFF). The decision was taken after FIFA received confirmation that mandate of the committee of administrators set up to assume the powers of AIFF Executive Committee had been terminated, FIFA said. FIFA added Under-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 can now be held in India as planned.
