1. The biggest sporting event in the world, the 32nd Summer Olympic Games got underway with a glittering opening ceremony in Tokyo this evening, after a one-year postponement due to the COVID pandemic. The mega quadrennial event is being held at the newly-built National Stadium in the Japan capital Tokyo.
2. Officials & dignitaries, including Japan’s Emperor Naruhito, French President Emmanuel Macron & US First Lady Jill Biden attended the opening ceremony.
3. Indian Boxer M.C. Mary Kom & Indian Men’s Hockey team’s captain Manpreet Singh led the 127-member strong Indian contingent. President Ram Nath Kovind & PM Modi conveyed their best wishes to the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics on behalf of our nation.
4. Indian archer Pravin Jadhav finished at 31st position with 656 points in the ranking round. Atanu Das finished at 35th position with 653 points after 72 shots and Tarundeep Rai at 37th with 652 points. Kim Je Deok of Korea topped the round with 688 points.
5. Indian archers Deepika Kumari & Pravin Jadhav overcame the higher-ranked team of Chinese Taipei in missed team event pre-quarters, at the shooting range with both Elavenil Valarivan & Apurvi Chandela failing to qualify for the finals in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification round. Indian men’s hockey team’s first match in Pool A against New Zealand is underway, while women’s weightlifting 49 kg will begin. Medal hope Mirabai Chanu will be in action. Judoka Likmabam Sushila Devi will take on Eva Csernoviczki of Hungary in Women’s 48kg Round of 32 elimination bout.

India set a victory target of 226 runs against Sri Lanka in rain-interrupted 3rd ODI. After 23 overs rain had stopped the play.
