Twenty-two shooters from India are ready to go for medals at the shooting venue in Chateauroux, approximately 275 kilometres from Paris, at the Olympics, starting July 26.
Each shooter has strong chances, though Sift Kaur Samra, will be a hot prospect. The crack rifle markswoman from Punjab may be relatively new in comparison to Anjum Moudgil, but she is in good health and a great frame of mind.
At an interaction from her training base on the France-Luxembourg border, Sift spoke on how being clear in the mind is important for her. She shoots in the 50m rifle 3position event. Sift spoke on how crucial it is to be relaxed and stay focussed. Proof of it came in Hangzhou, China, at the Asian Games last year, where she smoked a gold medal with a high score of 469.6
At 22, she if young, in a sport where age does not matter. She has talked of not feeling pressure and absorbing it like a sponge. ““I think your mind is the strongest thing. The more you keep it clear, the more important it is for you. For me, to keep things clear is one thing. The second is to be happy,” said Sift.
The World No. Sift handles pressure positively. “It’s just that you go and compete as you compete in other tournaments. Nothing special, nothing different, nothing new,” was her explanation, even before the Olympics.
Even though there are so many shooters who idolise each other and push each other to do well, Sift ensures she gets along well with all the others. Her smile is most endearing. The shooting venue is far from Paris, yet, she is hoping to meet her idol, PV Sindhu. After all, for many, Sindhu has been a role model, and Sindhu sets an example with two Olympic medals to her name. The third, is loading, in Paris.
