PT Usha

New Delhi: In a recent statement, IOA President Dr. PT Usha expressed her profound shock and disappointment at the disqualification of Indian wrestler Vinesh from the Olympic Games Women’s Wrestling 50kg class competition. Dr. Usha, visibly moved by the turn of events, stressed the impact of this decision on the athlete and the nation.

Assurance of Support

Dr. Usha met with Vinesh at the Olympic Village Polyclinic shortly after the disqualification was announced. She assured Vinesh of the complete support of the Indian Olympic Association, the Government of India, and the entire country. Dr. Usha emphasized that every effort is being made to provide Vinesh with the necessary medical and emotional support during this challenging time.

Appeal Filed by Wrestling Federation of India

The Wrestling Federation of India has swiftly filed an appeal to the United World Wrestling (UWW) to reconsider the decision to disqualify Vinesh. Dr. Usha confirmed that the Indian Olympic Association is following up on this appeal in the strongest possible manner, demonstrating their commitment to justice for the athlete.

Efforts to Meet Competition Requirements

Dr. Usha acknowledged the relentless efforts made by Vinesh, the medical team led by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, and Chef-de-Mission Gagan Narang to ensure that Vinesh could meet the competition requirements. Despite these efforts, Vinesh was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams.

Maintaining Morale

The IOA President highlighted that every step is being taken to ensure that the morale of the Indian contingent remains high. Dr. Usha expressed confidence that all Indians will stand with Vinesh and the entire team, providing them with the strength and encouragement needed during this difficult period.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala Explains the Situation

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala provided insights into the weight-cutting process that led to Vinesh’s disqualification. Wrestlers often participate in a weight category less than their natural weight, which requires a calculated restriction of food and water along with rigorous exercise. This process, while intended to provide a competitive advantage, can lead to weakness and energy depletion.

Post-Weigh-In Challenges

Dr. Pardiwala explained that Vinesh’s nutritionist had carefully calculated the required weight restoration to be 1.5 kg after the weigh-in. However, following three bouts, small amounts of water had to be administered to prevent dehydration, which led to a slight increase in her weight. Despite all possible measures, including drastic ones like cutting her hair, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams over the 50 kg limit.

Medical Precautions

Following her disqualification, Vinesh was administered IV fluids to prevent dehydration, and blood tests were conducted to ensure her well-being. Dr. Pardiwala assured that all of Vinesh’s parameters remained normal throughout this process, and she is in good physical and medical condition.

Emotional Impact on Vinesh

Despite being physically and medically fit, Vinesh expressed her deep disappointment to Dr. Usha regarding her disqualification. The IOA President remains committed to supporting Vinesh and ensuring that her morale and spirit remain unbroken in the face of this setback.
