If India’s track and field campaign needed a solid thrust, Avinash Sable provided it at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Monday evening. As the celebrated Indian took to the heats, he churned the track to finish fifth in the heats of the 3000, steeplechase, clocking 8:15.43 at the historic Stade de France venue.

This was the thrust and turbo boost India needed in its campaign, as later on Tuesday, Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Kumar Jena will be seen in action in the faovurite javelin event. Neeraj and Jena will compete in morning action and hope to make the final through a qualifying of 84 metres.

Back to Sable, he has been the quiet performer in Indian athletics. No hype, no noise, Sable performs and without much glare. The top five runners from each heat made it to the final slated for August 8. Sable took the early lead of the race and led for the first two and a half minutes before Abraham Kiwiot of Kenya and Samuel Firewu of Ethiopia took command.

At the halfway point, the Indian steeplechase runner was overtaken by Ryuji Miyura of Japan and occupied fourth place. Sable climbed to second place after six minutes but a poor water jump saw him drifting to fifth shortly before climbing back to third. After seven and a half minutes, Sable dropped to fifth.
In the final stretch, he had the luxury of slowing down given the considerable distance from the trailing athletes and made the Olympic final for the first time in his career. In Tokyo, Sable failed to qualify after finishing seventh in his heats.
