It is a matter of pride, Jay Shah is set to take over as chairman of the International Cricket Council, in the near future. Currently, secretary of the BCCI, Jay Shah heads the Asian Cricket Council as well and may well replace Greg Barclay unopposed. The rise of Jay Shah in the last five years has been massive and he has played an important role in the sub-continent. More recently, he has been seen in a larger role, with his presence at the Paris 2024 Olympics seen as a sign of India making its presence felt, since cricket will be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The path ahead for Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be a tricky one but he will handle it well. In 2025, Pakistan are set to host the Champions Trophy and the neighbours are keenly awaiting the arrival of India to play in Lahore. As of today, there is no indication the Indian government will clear participation of the team to travel across the border given the strained relations between the two countries. Obviously, Jay Shah will have to deal with this issue very tactfully.

For someone who has done good for Indian cricketers and ensured senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are still part of team India, Jay Shah has dealt with them very maturely. He is just 35. At the same time, Jay Shah also ensured the transition from Rahul Dravid to Gautam Gambhir would be minus any hiccups.

Indian cricket is in a good space and the events like IPL and state premier leagues are booming. However, the role which Jay Shah has to play in global cricket will be larger. It is well known, countries like Australia and England look at India glowingly as they bring in the financial strength. Looking ahead, the ICC has to handle important issues like its own properties – World Cup – and also ensure the profusion of T20 leagues all over the world does not result in a cricket fatigue. More important, cricket becoming part of the Asian Games and the next Olympics is also important.

For all those who have followed cricket over the decades, India and the ICC leadership has been defined by the presence of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N.Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar. It is well known, when it comes to financial power, India has enormous clout in world cricket. Jay Shah hails from a business background and is aware what is expected of him. Just 35, his rise has been massive.
