New Delhi, October 12, 2025: The national capital witnessed a spectacular morning as over 40,500 runners gathered at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium for the 20th Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, marking a powerful start to the city’s Diwali festivities. From professionals and students to soldiers and senior citizens, participants from every walk of life joined in, transforming Delhi’s streets into a vibrant display of unity, determination, and festive spirit.
A Celebration of Inclusivity and Human Spirit
This year’s marathon once again highlighted the themes of inclusivity and diversity, featuring special categories such as the Great Delhi Run, Champions with Disability Run, and the Senior Citizens Run. Each segment embodied resilience and togetherness, with over 14,000 runners using the Great Delhi Run to promote social causes close to their hearts.
Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, who flagged off the event, expressed pride in the city’s collective energy. “When 140 crore Indians unite for fitness, no obstacle can stop us. This morning truly belonged to the city and its people,” she remarked, lauding the participation of over 10,000 women among the runners.
Distinguished Presence and Historic Participation
The marathon was flagged off in the presence of eminent dignitaries, including Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan. In a first for the event, all three wings of the Indian Armed Forces—Army, Navy, and Air Force—participated under the leadership of Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Lt Gen Rahul R. Singh, and Vice Admiral L.S. Pathania.
Adding to the event’s significance, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Shri Omar Abdullah joined the Half Marathon alongside his sons, who participated in the 10K run.
Global Icons and Stellar Performances
The international spotlight shone bright as Olympic legend Carl Lewis, the International Event Ambassador, inspired runners from the sidelines. He was joined by Olympic bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh and Commonwealth Games medallist Tejasvin Shankar, amplifying the event’s star presence.
“It’s incredible to see such energy and endurance here in Delhi,” said Carl Lewis. “The performances, especially by the women athletes, are proof of how far the sport has evolved.”
In the elite field, Kenya reaffirmed its dominance with Alex Matata winning the men’s race in 59:50 and Lilian Kasait Rengeruk taking the women’s title at 1:07:20. Among Indian athletes, Abhishek Pal clinched his third VDHM title with 1:04:17, while Seema emerged victorious in 1:11:23.
Flawless Organization and a City United by Fitness
The success of the marathon was supported by a massive on-ground effort — with 200 volunteers, 400 healthcare providers, Delhi Police, DMRC, and NDMC working seamlessly under the coordination of the Delhi Government, the event’s official partner.
As the sun rose over the capital, the streets came alive with music, cheers, and the rhythmic pace of thousands of runners. The 20th Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon stood not just as a sporting spectacle but as a testament to Delhi’s indomitable spirit, unity, and love for life.
