Manu Bhaker sealed a historic bronze medal for India at the Paris Olympics on Sunday as she won a bronze medal in air pistol. The nation wept in joy as a girl winning a medal in shooting was historic.
A former student of LSR College, Manu had trained hard for the last eight years. When she failed at the Tokyo Olympics, people made fun. This was her shot at retribution, this was her revenge, and this was her faith in coach Jaspal Rana.
The air pistol final was indeed a tense one but Manu Bhaker was composed. She went through each shot with care and purpose. “I was relaxed, this was only a bronze medal,” said Manu. There was no need for this apology. She had broken a big barrier, a medal in shooting.
As one who reads the Holy Bhagwad Gita and prays and mediates, the inner calm came to the fore as Manu won a medal she has been preparing for. For India, this is historic, as from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to IOA President PT Usha, all congratulated her,
Manu will compete in two more events, the team pair and 25 metre sports pistol. There is every chance she will win even one more medal as well.
Back to the final, Manu was a beacon of hope and she lived up to the billing. She wept in Tokyo but gathered herself. To win bronze was a big feat.
“Well, I feel great. And it was a long-due medal for India. And India deserves more, even more medals, as many as possible. So, we are looking forward to as many events as possible this time. And the entire team has worked really hard and personally, for me, the feeling is really surreal. I feel that I did a good job. I put in a lot of effort and even until the last one, I was just fighting with all energy that I had,” said Manu Bhaker.
Coach Jaspal Rana was pleased and cried. “I had been wronged. I am glad Manu did this for India. There is more to come,” he said.
