Kapil Dev Names India’s Next White-Ball Captain, Asks Gambhir to Construct Side Around Him for Future ICC Events

Kapil Dev

Former India skipper and World Cup victor Kapil Dev has entered the fray in the current debate regarding Team India’s future captain for white-ball cricket. Since Rohit Sharma is expected to be approaching the far end of his limited-overs career, Kapil Dev has proposed a revolutionary step — naming Shubman Gill as the new captain in ODIs and T20Is.

‘Build the team around Gill,’ says Kapil

In an interview with a sports news website, Kapil Dev appreciated Shubman Gill’s temperament, technique, and leadership qualities. Gill is young, one who is focused and knows the contemporary game well. He’s someone the team can respect in trying moments. “With the right guidance, he can become a good leader,” remarked Kapil.

He also appealed to the probable new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, to form a side with Gill as its core. Gambhir possesses a keen cricketing mind. If he accepts the job, he needs to prepare for the next ICC tournaments from now. “It’s necessary to provide a young leader with time and space to construct a team and philosophy,” he further suggested.

A transition in the making

India’s current white-ball captaincy, led by Rohit Sharma, has experienced ups and downs, such as making it to the finals of ICC events but not quite managing to win a trophy. Although Rohit is likely to captain in the next T20 World Cup, the debate about the future is gaining momentum, particularly with players such as Gill, Hardik Pandya, and KL Rahul being considered as captaincy material.

Kapil’s endorsement of Gill adds weight to the argument for ushering in a new era with a long-term captain who can lead India through the next ICC cycle, including the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Gambhir as coach: A possible game-changer

The rumor of Gautam Gambhir being considered as the next head coach has also generated debate about Indian cricket’s future. Kapil feels Gambhir’s no-nonsense approach and experience of mentoring youngsters during his period with KKR in the IPL makes him an ideal candidate.

“Gambhir’s no-nonsense style, combined with Gill being under his guidance, could give India the direction of white-ball cricket going ahead,” Kapil opined.

With the BCCI poised to make pivotal choices in the next few months, Kapil Dev’s recommendations could have an impact on the blueprint for India’s future champions.
