The junior Indian wrestlers did the nation proud at the Under-17 UWW World Championship to win their first-ever team title with 185 points in Amman, Jordan. Leading the way for India was Kajal in the 69 kg weight category as she outclassed Oleksandra of Ukraine 9-2 in the final. What stood out in the win for Kajal was using better technique and also “taking down” her opponent in the later stages of the bout.

For the Indians to win five gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals was important, given the negative current for the sport in India in recent months. Even as there is churning in the Indian sports system as only one wrestler won a medal in the Paris 2024 Olympics – Aman Sehrawat – from the Chhatrasal Stadium in the Capital, news of junior wrestlers grabbing the opportunity is important. It is well known, the next Olympic cycle has already kicked in, and India will look to do well in the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

After four gold medals on Thursday, India added gold, silver, two bronzes and a fifth-place finish to stand on top of the podium after years of second and third-place finishes. Japan finished second with 146 points and Kazakhstan finished third with 79 points.

One more India was also in the final, Shrutika Patil, but lost to Japan’s Yuu Katsume. Yuu was in great form and won 11-0.

Wrestling is on sport where India have done well since the time Sushil Kumar won a bronze medal for India in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He went on to improve the medal colour to silver in 2012 London. After that, legends like Yogeshwar Dutt, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia have also won medals for India in the Olympic stage, though Vinesh Phogat being disqualified before the gold medal match in Paris 2024 for being overweight has caused turmoil for her fans at home.

The importance of Indian juniors performing well has to be understood as they have the potential. A lot of time has been wasted on focus away from the sports. Hopefully, these wins in the under-17 meet will help India focus better.
