Neeraj Chopra created history by winning a second javelin Olympic medal on Thursday night at the Paris Olympics. Even as his rivalry with Arshad Nadeem took centre-stage and the Pakistani won gold, there was respect from Neeraj to his neighbour, whose two throws over 90 metres was mind blowing.

Later, speaking to the media, Neeraj spoke of his problems on a groin injury which has been bothering him for years. Everyone knew he had a problem with his adductor, but the groin issue is like a well-kept secret. He has mentioned it may need surgery and he still has plenty left in him.

Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal came after a fierce contest with Arshad Nadeem, who set a new Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m. Chopra’s best throw of 89.45m secured him the second spot, with Grenada’s Peters Anderson finishing third with a throw of 88.54m.

Speaking about his experience, Neeraj talked on pride and sportsmanship. “I had faith in myself. After Arshad’s throw, I believed in my second attempt. Despite the injury, I pushed myself, and my throw was good. There’s still a lot left in me, and I need to stay fit for it. I can achieve it, and even though I haven’t thrown 90m yet, I believed I will do it in my second attempt. However, holding the Indian flag and winning a medal is a significant achievement,” Neeraj Chopra said.

Reflecting on his competition with Arshad Nadeem, Neeraj acknowledged his rival’s hard work and excellence. “Arshad threw exceptionally well and put in a lot of hard work. We should congratulate those who perform well. I have been competing against him since 2016, and this is the first time he has defeated me. But this is part of sports. We have to accept it and move on,” added Chopra.
