The countdown for Gautam Gambhir being appointed as Team India coach by the BCCI has begun. News is trickling in, GG, as he is called, has bid Kolkata Knight Riders farewell after flying into Kolkata last week and making a video for his former team. This means, he is free from all ties with the IPL franchise and can look ahead at a new role.
Since the time Gambhir piloted KKR to the IPL title in June, news has been raging he will be the next coach of India, following the exit of Rahul Dravid. Dravid had said well before the ICC T20 World Cup, the tour to the US and West Indies was his farewell. The stand-in coach for India is VVS Laxman, as he handles the team in Zimbabwe.
Back to Gambhir, he has rich experience as a cricketer, an IPL winning captain for KKR and also coached the Lucknow Super Giants. His stock has risen after he made the IPL campaign for KKR a rocking one this time.
Initially, there was suspense if SRK – Shahrukh Khan would leave Gambhir. But as this is a national assignment and prestige at stake, Gambhir will be named coached by the BCCI this week, in all probability.
He has also hinted at having his own support staff, which means a new batting coach, bowling coach and fielding coach. More important, Gambhir has also spoken of the need to have two different teams, for red ball cricket and white ball cricket.
A fierce thinker and student of cricket, Gambhir becoming coach is much anticipated. He has been groomed for the job as Indian cricket heads into a transition phase as well. With the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, Gambhir will look to find the new young talent which can be groomed. Gambhir is also going to ensure he will have two different sets of players for red ball cricket and white ball cricket.
