Deepali Deshpande was well in control of her emotions as she watched Swapnil Khushale win a historic bronze medal in the 50m 3 position rifle event in the Paris Olympics. The genial coach has guided and mentored Swapnil for over 12 years and since he has now matured a lot. In her view, hard work for years has helped him peak on the big stage.

Talking at length, Deepali explained how modern day shooters are well versed with how to prepare and peak on the big stage. “This was my boy’s first Olympics but I had prepared him well. They all have to learn how to manage under pressure and this lesson learnt is a good one. Swapnil came to me as a small boy and he learnt how to improve daily. His dedication is worth praise and he does not like to miss training even one day,” said Deepali.

She did not feel bad she did not make it to the Paris Olympics. “It is ok, my students are doing well and even Arjun Babuta could have shot a medal, There are more chances and more Olympics which will come,” said Deepali. Is she excited about meeting Swapnil? “Let him come, he finally has to return and meet me only,” said Deepali.

At a time when shooters have won three medals for India, Deepali and coaches like Jaspal Rana are happy their efforts are beating fruit. Jaspal says he will wait for the last match of Manu to end in sports pistol.
