New Delhi: The Ad Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has extended the deadline for a decision in the case of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat against United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Initially set to be resolved earlier, the time limit for the Sole Arbitrator, Dr. Annabelle Bennett, has now been extended until 6:00 PM on August 11, 2024.

The dispute stems from Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympic finals due to a weigh-in issue, which resulted in her being replaced in the gold medal match. Phogat’s appeal, supported by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), argues that she was within the required weight limit during earlier bouts and seeks to be awarded a joint silver medal.

The CAS, which was established specifically to handle disputes during the Olympics, held a three-hour hearing where all parties, including the IOA, presented their cases. Although the operative decision is expected by August 11, a detailed reasoned order will be issued at a later date. The IOA has expressed hope for a favorable outcome for Phogat, who has announced her retirement from wrestling following this controversy.
