AFI condoles the death of Medical Committee Chairman Dr KT Bhowmick

Athletics Federation of India condoled the death of AFI Medical Committee Chairman Dr. Kumar Tapas Bhowmick at the Safdarjung Hospital today. He was 65.

A renowned radio therapist, specialising in cancer treatment, he retired from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Only last month, the Association of Radiation Oncologists had presented him an award for Lifetime Achievement.

AFI President Dr. Adille J. Sumariwalla said the Federation had lost a mentor. “Dr. Bhowmick took over as Chairman of the Medical Committee only recently after the passing of Dr. Arun Mendiratta, but his association with track and field sport goes back a long time,” he said. “We shall miss his wise counsel.”

AFI Planning Committee Chairman Dr. Lalit K. Bhanot said the sport was poorer for Dr. Bhowmick’s passing. “Dr. Bhowmick shone like a beacon for us, providing us apt guidance for many years now. In his death, I have lost a very dear friend and guide,” Dr. Bhanot said. “He was a very rare combination of a medical expert with abiding interest in sport.”

An avid sports fan, his contribution to Athletics was immense. Dr. Bhowmick was a Tennis umpire and Hockey umpire. He was the Indian contingent’s doctor at Tokyo2020 Olympic Games in 2021, ensuring the medical safety of the athletes and support staff in times made challenging by the Covid-19 pandemic.
