Modern day cricket is non-stop. Just a week after Team India won the ICC T20 World Cup in Bridgetown, Barbados, a new bunch headed by Shubman Gill will take on Zimbabwe from today (Saturday) in Harare.
Sample this, the team which won the trophy landed in New Delhi on Thursday, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then rocked at the Wankhede Stadium late into the night.
Now the focus is back on a team where the accent is on youth and fresh faces. Of course, all the youngsters initially selected could not make it to Harare due to flight delays from Barbados. Yet, the talent pool and the disposal at Gill and stand-in coach VVS Laxman will suffice for taking on Zimbabwe, the minnows of world cricket.
Indeed, 2024 has been a mixed one for skipper Gill, who missed the bus for the World Cup. As skipper of IPL team Gujarat Titans, he did not perform well. But then, he was still unlucky not to be chosen for the World Cup. He has age om his side and the right temperament. So, Gill the batter will look to score runs as well as lead a side which can be the template for the future. The next ICC T20 World Cup is in India in 2026.
With three big guns calling it time on their T20 international careers – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja – there are enough chances for a clutch of youngsters. Yashasvi Jaiswal is not there in Harare at present and will join later. But he will also share the attention alongwith Ruturaj Gaikwad. Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel will also be tested and analysed in this tour.
Dashing star from IPL Abhishek Sharma will also look to score runs in Zimbabwe, where five T20 internationals will be held. After the Zimbabwe tour, Team India will then travel to Sri Lanka, where the new coach is expected to join. Gautam Gambhir is the name doing the rounds.
