With the Kanwar Yatra on the horizon, the Uttar Pradesh government has imposed stricter security measures to ensure that no act of violence takes place during the annual religious procession. One of the key features of the new guidelines is a ban on the possession of tridents (trishuls), hockey sticks, wooden batons, or anything similar that can serve as weapons in the hands of devotees.
Earlier Incidents Trigger Action
This step comes on the heels of earlier incidents in which there were clashes involving groups of Kanwariyas, property damage, and further clashes in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur districts. In an effort to make this year’s yatra peaceful, the authorities issued warning that carrying such items would lead to arrest and FIRs.
Crackdown on Noise Pollution and Traffic Disruptions
Besides prohibiting weapon-like items, the government has also limited loud DJ music, loudspeakers, and motorbikes equipped with altered silencers. These measures will be used to regulate noise levels and ensure public order during the event, which usually results in traffic jams and disturbance.
Police Deployment and Monitoring in Central Areas
To assist the police, a massive police deployment is scheduled along the principal Kanwar routes. The Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and other paramilitary troops will be deployed at vulnerable points. Crowd movement will be watched by CCTV cameras and drones, which will rapidly identify any signs of disturbance.
Pilgrimage Background and Devotee Behavior
The Kanwar Yatra, which takes place during the Hindu month of Sawan, is attended by millions of devotees of Lord Shiva from northern states who undertake long pilgrimages to fetch Ganga water. Though the pilgrimage is largely religious, some members attending it in recent years have indulged in rowdy activities, which have been criticized by the public.
Government Appeals for Peaceful Participation
The state government of Uttar Pradesh has asserted that religious fervor cannot be a pretext for acts of disruption. Officials are appealing to all the pilgrims to obey the law, adhere to the guidelines framed by the authorities, and assist the authorities in ensuring a peaceful atmosphere during the event.
Emergency Help and Coordination Centers
To deal with emergencies or conflicts, help centers and mobile health units will be positioned on the main routes. Phone numbers would also be distributed to ensure timely assistance, showing the government’s strong commitment to a safe and respectful yatra.
