The following is an ancient story from our shastras that will help you better understand Karma’s
workings and the effects of gossiping.
Once, the rich merchant lived peacefully and joyfully with his family in the city. On a fine
morning, he decided to call on a group of saints for a festive lunch. So, he asked his wife to
make the arrangements for the same while he invited them over.
Both went on to make it successful. The wife called on the house helper and asked him to tell
the chef to prepare a grand meal for lunch for the saints. He obeyed her orders and conveyed
the same to the chef.
Then, the chef asked the helper to bring a bucket of milk to make the rice pudding. The helper
followed the orders. He immediately set on the road to bring a bucket of milk from the milk seller.
He bought the milk but on his way back, he was very tired and the summer waves made him
feel dizzy. So, he sat under a tree for some rest.
Unfortunately, he fell asleep under the cool shelter of the tree and on the top pf the tree there
was an eagle eating snake. Coincidently, the snake’s poison fell into the bucket full of milk.
After sometime, the helper woke up with a sudden jerk full of fear and guilt about falling asleep
and he immediately rushed to the home with the milk. Upon reaching there, he handed over the
milk to the chef and the chef made the rice pudding of it.
No one was aware of what was going to happen. After eating the poisonous rice pudding four of
the yogis were dead immediately and the other three were gravely sick.
Now, the Lords of Karma were in a dilemma in whose account this karma should be put in
because some serious sin happened but none of the parties involved knew what was happening
or had any intention to hurt anybody, so, who should be punished?
That is when Lords of Karma went on to the Supreme God for guidance and God said, put the
karma in the accounts of those people who are gossiping about the incident and blaming the
people involved.
That is why, it has been taught to us since childhood to not judge others or gossip about other
people. It is because irrespective of the act, we as a third person are not qualified to sketch out
someone’s character or pass judgment on what other people do. Instead, it can result in
generating bad karma for ourselves even if we have not done anything.
