INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. *India on Thursday strongly objected to the expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects* in any third country while expressing concern about its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In 2015, China announced the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project in Pakistan worth USD 46 billion, of which Baluchistan is an integral part. CPEC is a part of China’s most ambitious project ‘Belt and Road Initiative’, aimed at renewing the country’s historic trade routes in the coastal countries of south-east Asia.

2. *The Pakistani contingent did not participate in the colourful opening ceremony of the 44th Chess Olympiad* that was inaugurated in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on 28 Jul evening in Chennai.

A war of words broke out between India and Pakistan on Thursday after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad announced that the Pakistani team will not participate in the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai as India passed the torch relay of the event through Jammu and Kashmir.

3. *Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is set to visit India next week* (01 Aug to 04 Aug) to review the progress made in this wide-ranging partnership between the two countries.

4. *India and Israel are set to partner for the 17th Everything About Water Expo 2022 to be held in New Delhi from August 4-6.*

Four high-level water experts from Israel will take part in this event. They will share their knowledge in a session that will focus on the Israeli model for water management, policy regulations, water technologies, R&D implementation and the Israel-India water partnership.

5. *A trilateral meeting of the Focal Points of India, France and the United Arab Emirates was held on 28 Jul.*

The three sides exchanged perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and explored the potential areas of trilateral cooperation including Maritime Security, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, Blue Economy, Regional Connectivity.

6. External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar left for Tashkent this evening on a two-day visit to Uzbekistan to take part in the meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers.

The meeting will discuss preparations for the upcoming Meeting of the Council of Heads of State on 15th and 16th September in Samarkand this year.

7. Ola Electric has signed a Production Linked Incentive (PLI) agreement with the Ministry of Heavy Industries for indigenous cell manufacturing in India.

🌎WORLD NEWS🌍

1. *US President Joe Biden’s video call with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping,* lasted for 2 hours and 17 minutes, according to a White House press pool.

2. US Federal Reserve last night hiked interest rate by 75 basis points to check inflation. It was the second straight 75 basis point increase, and the fourth rate hike this year.

3. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has claimed that his country is ready to mobilise its nuclear war deterrent.

4. In Mali, 15 soldiers and three civilians were killed in two coordinated attacks by Islamists in southwest part of the country on 27 Jul.

5. In Somalia, 11 people died after a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance of a government building in southern part of the country yesterday. Marka District Commissioner Abdillahi Ali Waafow was among those killed in the attack.

6. A Bangladeshi tribunal on Thursday sentenced to death six members of ‘Razakar Bahini’, an East Pakistani paramilitary force, for “crimes against humanity” during the 1971 war. Official estimates say three million people were killed and at least two lakh women were raped in the Liberation War. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government set up the war crimes tribunal in 2010.
