1. Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu to visit Gabon, Senegal and Qatar from May 30 to June 7.

2. External Affairs Ministry said, this will be the first visit from India at the level of Vice President to all three countries. This will also be the first-ever high-level visit from India to Gabon and to Senegal. The Vice President’s visit to Gabon and to Senegal will add momentum to India’s engagement with Africa and also emphasise its commitment to the African continent.

3. The Govt has brought the import of paper under compulsory registration from the 1st of October. The import policy of major paper products has been amended from ‘Free’ to ‘Free subject to compulsory registration under Paper Import Monitoring System’. A notification to this effect has been issued by the Directorate General of Free Trade.

4. PM Modi assured that India will support Sri Lanka’s democracy, stability and economic recovery. “India is providing all possible support to Sri Lanka. This includes financial support, fuel, food, medicine and other essential items,” he said. He noted that many Indian organisations and individuals have sent assistance to the people of Sri Lanka. He said in a meeting in Chennai.

5. US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Thomas West on Thursday praised India for supporting Afghanistan’s public. “India is providing critical humanitarian aid, has interests to protect, brings enormous capability and experience to supporting Afghan people,” the US envoy tweeted. India has supplied tonnes of wheat, winter clothing, essential medications and doses of Covaxin to Afghanistan.

1. Pakistan govt raises petrol price by PKR 30 per litre, new rate effective from midnight.

2. Pakistan’s National Assembly on Thursday approved a bill that seeks to stop the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in general elections as well as disallow overseas citizens from voting in polls.

3. An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 hit the Tirapata region of southern Peru on Thursday, no casualties reported.

4. Lithuanian parliament on Thursday voted to accept a draft bill on legalising same-sex unions, enlisting it for further debate. As many as 70 lawmakers voted in favour of draft bill.

5. Britain’s Prince Charles on 25 May travelled to Romania’s capital Bucharest to meet the Ukrainian refugees who fled their country since Russia began its invasion in February.

6. Spain reports 25 new cases of monkeypox, country’s tally rises to 84.

7. Authorities in US’ Southern California are on high alert after 21 people, including 19 students, were killed in a school shooting in Texas earlier this week. Police departments of some cities in Los Angeles County, including Arcadia, have said they will increase patrols around local schools to ensure the safety of children.

8. The death toll from the collapse of a 10-storey commercial building in Iran’s Abadan city has risen to 19.

9. World Health Organization has re-appointed Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus as Director-General of WHO for the second term with effect from 16th August 2022.
