1. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met USAID Administrator Samantha Power in New Delhi on 26 Jul.
They discussed global development prospects in the context of food, energy, and debt challenges. Both also exchanged views on further expanding the India-US partnership.
2. Bangladesh’s largest private carrier, US-Bangla Airlines will be doubling its flights to Kolkata from August 4. The airline announced that it will operate two flights daily from Dhaka to Kolkata in place of one being operated currently.
3. PM Modi congratulated Ranil Wickremesinghe for being elected as Sri Lanka’s new President.
4. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said that two Indian peacekeepers of the BSF lost their lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jaishankar expressed ‘deep grief’ over the killings, adding, “The perpetrators of these outrageous attacks must be held accountable and brought to justice.” At least five people have died in violent anti-UN protests in Goma.
5. India has designated five new wetlands of International importance, which include three wetlands (Karikili Bird Sanctuary, Pallikaranai Marsh Reserve Forest & Pichavaram Mangrove) in Tamil Nadu, one (Pala wetland) in Mizoram and one wetland (Sakhya Sagar) in Madhya Pradesh, making a total of 54 Ramsar sites in the country. The Ramsar sites have been increased from 49 to 54 Ramsar sites.

1. Russia decides to quit International Space Station after 2024. Moscow’s space agency Roscosmos’ newly-appointed chief Yury Borisov announced the decision. President Vladimir Putin also briefed about.
2. Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei visited Ukraine and met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, becoming the first Latin American head of state to make the trip after the Russia-Ukraine war started. “We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who have resisted with courage,” said Giammattei at a joint press conference. Zelenskyy thanked Giammattei for sanctions on Russia.
3. At least five people killed and about 50 injured during anti-UN protests in East Congo.
4. Six people, including a woman, have been shot dead by gunmen at a private drug rehabilitation centre in Mexico’s Jalisco state.
5. Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra has questioned Syria’s decade-long suspension from the Arab League, saying, “Syria’s absence from the Arab League harms cooperation between Arab countries.” The comments were made as Algeria is set to host the 2022 Arab League meet. Syria was removed from the 22-nation grouping in 2011 after a civil war broke out in the country.
6. *Charges dropped against Lesotho ex-PM in estranged wife’s murder* :: Lesotho’s chief prosecutor on Tuesday dropped the charges against former PM Thomas Thabane and his wife Maesaiah Thabane in the murder case of Lipolelo Thabane, Thomas Thabane’s estranged wife. Lipolelo was shot dead in the capital city of Maseru in June 2017. The prosecution said that the charges were being dropped as critical witnesses in the case couldn’t be located.
7. 85 al-Shabaab fighters were killed by regional forces in Ethiopia during border clashes on Monday. The fighting took place in a region close to Somalia where al-Shabaab controls large swathes of territory.
8. At least 471 people have died in one week of gang violence that broke out on the streets of Haiti’s capital city Port-au-Prince, UN said on Tuesday. About 3,000 people have reportedly fled their homes in the wake of the violence.
