S Jaishankar addressed 77th UNSC

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar addressed the High Level Session of the 77th United Nations General Assembly on September 24. He is leading the India delegation for the High Level Week at the United Nations General Assembly. The theme of the 77th UNGA is “A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges”.

The Minister has been participating in plurilateral meetings of the Quad, BRICS, and other trilateral formats, as well as bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit.

2. The QUAD countries have signed the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) partnership guidelines recently.

3. The Electronics Sector Skill Council of India (ESSCI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Samsung India to empower the youth with industry-relevant skills.

4. Indian author and poet Meena Kandasamy has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Hermann Kesten Prize by the PEN Centre in Germany’s Darmstadt.

5. USD 350 million in aid has been approved by the World Bank for the “Systems Reform Endeavors for Transformed Health Achievement” in Gujarat or the SRESTHA-G project.

1. The Afghan Taliban government has accused Pakistan of creating chaos and military tension at the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

2. Storm Fiona hits Canada’s Atlantic Coast, Thousands without power. Parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick are experiencing torrential rain and winds of up to 148 km/h (92 mph).

3. Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi pledged to deal decisively with the protests, which have now spread to most of Iran’s 31 provinces.

4. Many leaders dwell on topic of Russia-Ukraine conflict at UN General Assembly meeting. UN humanitarian office figures show that governments and private organizations have put up about 3.7 billion dollar to aid Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees this year.

5. Japanese PM Fumio Kishida has said his country will welcome back tourists from October 11 this year, after an over two-year-long coronavirus-forced travel suspension.
