INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. NITI Aayog under the Indo-German Cooperation has released the inaugural Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Urban Index and Dashboard 2021-22. In its journey towards localizing the SDGs and instituting robust SDG progress monitoring systems at the national, state, UTs, and local levels, NITI Aayog has achieved yet another milestone with the launch of the inaugural SDG Urban Index and Dashboard (2021-22).

2. The index and dashboard are a result of the NITI Aayog-GIZ and BMZ collaboration focused on driving SDG localization in cities, under the umbrella of Indo-German Development Cooperation. Total fifty-six urban areas were considered for computation. Shimla tops the Index followed by Coimbatore and Chandigarh.

Out of 56 urban areas ranked in the index, 44 are with population of above one million. 12 are State capitals with population of less than a million.

1. The indigenously developed Bangavax covid vaccine has received the ethical permission from the Bangladesh Medical Research Council (BMRC) to start the human trial.

2. The United Kingdom (UK) is going to host a summit of Foreign and Development Ministers from G7 in December 2021, in the city of Liverpool. The summit will be held from December 10 to 12, 2021.

3. United Kingdom holds the G7 Presidency in 2021. ASEAN Foreign Ministers from Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand will be attending the G7 Summit.

4. The Taliban on Tuesday said that they have expanded their interim cabinet by adding 27 new members.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the interim government, said the appointments had been made in compliance with orders from Taliban’s supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada.

5. Around 100 Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) militants have surrendered to the Taliban in Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, according to a local official. ISIS-K has carried out a string of bombings in the country recently, many of them mainly targeting the Taliban. Eastern Afghanistan is considered an ISIS-K stronghold since the formation of the group’s local branch in 2015.

6. France and Germany on Tuesday urged their citizens to leave Ethiopia as rebels claim to be advancing closer to capital Addis Ababa.

7. US President Joe Biden announced on Monday that he will be nominating Jerome Powell for a second four-year term as Federal reserve chair. Powell, a Republican, was first elected by former President Donald Trump. Biden said Powell was “the right person to see us through” the pandemic recovery and to fight off inflation.
