INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has entered into a partnership with Israel to establish the ‘India-Israel Center of Water Technology’ (CoWT). This joint initiative aims to address the challenges in water resources management and water technologies in India.

2. PM Modi, who arrived on an official visit to Australia on Tuesday, held a meeting with top Australian business leaders and prominent personalities in Sydney, respectively.

3. Recently PM Modi received the highest honours of Papua New Guinea and Fiji, an unprecedented acknowledgement of a non-resident in the two Pacific island nations.

During PM Modi maiden visit to Papua New Guinea, Modi hosted a significant summit between India and 14 Pacific island countries to bolster bilateral ties. Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, Sir Bob Dadae, awarded Modi with the Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu (GCL), which is the country’s highest civilian award.

4. 2nd meeting of G-20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) begins in Mumbai.

5. ISRO to launch New Generation Navigation Satellite: The satellite is expected to be launcheds early next week – possibly on Monday, May 29, 2023 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, using a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket.

6. Councillor Sameer Pandey created history by becoming the first-ever Indian-origin Lord Mayor in Australia. Pandey has been elected as the Lord Mayor of the City of Parramatta Council in Australia’s Sydney.

7. PM Modi meets Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, leaders take stock of bilateral ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held “fruitful discussions” with his newly elected Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese, and the two leaders “affirmed their desire to continue the positive momentum in the bilateral relationship”, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) here stated.

Modi and Albanese met on the sidelines of the Quad Summit, a day after the Centre-Left Labor Party leader was sworn-in as Australian PM.

1. IMF officials conclude Sri Lanka visit; acknowledge positive developments in macroeconomic situation.

Earlier in March this year, IMF had approved a 3 billion dollar bridge financing package in the form of an extended fund facility that would be available to Sri Lanka over multiple tranches over 4 years. The IMF mission led by Messrs. Peter Breuer and Masahiro Nozaki was on a staff visit to Colombo from May 11 to 23, 2023 to discuss recent economic developments and implementation of the IMF-supported program

2. China exported 1.07 million vehicles, a 58% increase compared to the same period in 2022, becoming the world’s largest exporter of cars, surpassing Japan. In contrast, Japan exported 954,185 vehicles.

3. Two government schools for girls in the Mirali region of Pakistan’s North Waziristan were blown up around midnight on Sunday, No casualty has been reported in the incidents.

3. Afghan Acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani has praised China’s ‘realistic position’ on Afghanistan following a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Wang Yu in Kabul on Monday.
