INTERNATIONAL NEWS

1. India and US sign Investment Incentive Agreement in Tokyo.

2. PM Modi is in Tokyo, Japan, at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to participate in the Quad leaders’ summit as part of his two-day tour starting on Monday, May 23. This is PM Modi’s second in-person Quad summit.

3. The Quad is aimed at bolstering cooperation among the member nations of the influential grouping and discussing developments in the Indo-Pacific region.

4. PM Modi invited greater participation by Japanese companies in India and proposed celebrating Japan’s contribution to India’s development journey in the form of a ‘Japan Week’.

5. Sri Lanka thanks India for its USD 16 million humanitarian aid package from India to help mitigate severe economic crisis.

6. ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research), NCDC (National Centre for Disease Control) put on alert as WHO confirms 80 monkeypox cases in 11 countries.

7. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) met held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 21-22 May 2022, under the chairmanship of H.E. Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce.

8. The prosecution of Dominica decided to withdraw/discontinue the legal proceedings in the illegal entry case against him. (for unlawful entry in May 2021)

9. Taliban leader Suhail Shaheen said India should seek to have deeper ties with the people of Afghanistan and should reopen its embassy in Kabul. He said that the Taliban was committed to providing full security to Indian diplomats.

1. US President Joe Biden said on Monday (May 23) he would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan against Chinese aggression in a comment that seemed to stretch the limits of the ambiguous US policy towards the self-ruled island.

2. Russia-Ukraine conflict pushed more than 100 million people forcibly displaced around the world: UN said.

4. Sri Lanka lifts state of emergency amid economic crisis, anti-govt protests.

5. The police in Sri Lanka have arrested 1,500 people in connection with the violent clashes that erupted on May 9 amid an economic crisis in the country. The violence erupted in the country after supporters of former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-government protesters. The clashes had left at least 10 people dead and more than 200 others injured.

6. *Pakistan* govt considers reducing working days to save fuel: This comes amid an increase in oil prices globally due to the conflict in Ukraine.
